Some F-150 pickup trucks and Explorer and Expedition SUVs have a defect that may be related to injuries and property damage

Ford and Lincoln are recalling more than 740,000 trucks and SUVs because they might roll away when parked. The recalled models are the 2018-2021 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs, the 2020-2021 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator SUVs, and the 2021 Ford F-150 pickup truck.
Ford told the National Highway Safety Administration that it is aware of nine injuries, 24 allegations of property damage, and 285 reports of potential vehicle movement that may be related to this defect.
The problem has to do with a transmission component called a parking pawl, which engages when a vehicle with an automatic transmission is shifted into Park to prevent it from rolling away. Due to a design defect, the parking pawl in the recalled trucks and SUVs might suddenly engage while driving. This could cause damage that would allow the vehicle to roll away when parked.
If that happens, the vehicles will automatically engage their electronic parking brakes to prevent a rollaway. In addition, drivers may notice a wrench-shaped light lit up on the screen behind the steering wheel.
To fix the problem, Ford and Lincoln dealerships will perform a software update and inspect and replace any damaged transmission components, free of charge. But Ford says that the fix may not be available until April 2027, so it will send two letters to owners, one to alert them of the recall and another when they can get their vehicles repaired.
