More than 200,000 cans are involved in the recall
The recall is for 20-ounce cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew.

The Hormel Foods Corporation is recalling 20-ounce cans of Dinty Moore Beef Stew after the company received several consumer complaints that the stew contained wood particles. No injuries have been reported.
The cans of beef stew were shipped to stores nationwide and are marked with a “best by” date of February 2028, lot code “T02045,” and establishment number “EST 199G.” (The lot code may have an additional number at the end.)
If you bought Dinty Moore Beef Stew before February 2025, you’re in the clear. The recalled cans were produced in February 2025. “It still makes sense to double-check the dates and numbers on any can of the product you have in your cabinet,” says James E. Rogers, PhD, director of product and food safety research and testing at CR. If you do have the recalled cans, throw them away or return them to the store where you bought them for an exchange.
Hormel Foods didn’t immediately respond to CR’s questions about how the cans could have become contaminated with wood. But Rogers says it’s not uncommon for materials like wood, plastic, and rubber to get into food during manufacturing. “Foreign objects in foods are a top reason why products are recalled,” he says. “They can cause mouth lacerations, broken teeth, digestive issues, or choking.”
