If your kitchen cabinetry doesn’t have the standard 36-inch-wide slot for a refrigerator, it can be tough to find one that fits. According to the market analysis firm OpenBrand, just around 8 percent of refrigerators come in a 33-inch width.
But you’re in the market for a fridge this size, you do have some good choices. Below, we’ve compiled this list of the best 33-inch-wide models from our labs, where testing involves taking millions of temperature readings over a period of months.
An advantage of 33-inch-wide refrigerators is that you may be able to get a model that won’t stick out from your cabinets. “You can find counter-depth models in this width, which can make a big difference in tight kitchen layouts,” says Breann Chai, who leads refrigerator testing at CR.
CR members can read on for ratings and reviews of the eight best 33-inch refrigerators from brands like GE, LG, and Whirlpool. We include a Top Pick and a runner-up for each configuration: top-freezer, bottom-freezer, side-by-side, and French-door. For more 33-inch models, see our refrigerator ratings. Best 33-Inch Top-Freezer Refrigerators
Top-freezer refrigerators tend to be more budget-friendly than models of other types, but their doors often require a wide space to swing fully open, and they’re more likely than other fridges to lack icemakers and water dispensers.
LG LRTLS2403S
The 33-inch-wide LG LRTLS2403S top-freezer refrigerator is a solid choice. With very good thermostat performance and temperature uniformity, as well as low noise output, it excels in our laboratory tests. Its energy efficiency is also top notch, while its crisper drawers and icemaker receive decent performance scores. The digital controls are a nice addition, but like many other top-freezers, it can be hard to use, especially if you use the fresh food compartment a lot. The refrigerator has spillproof shelves and a built-in water filter. The icemaker is optional and sold separately, but the fridge doesn’t have a water dispenser. In our latest member surveys, LG top-freezer refrigerators receive an outstanding score for predicted reliability and a middling score for owner satisfaction.
GE GTS22KGNRWW
The 33-inch GE GTS22KGNRWW is a simple top-freezer without any bells and whistles, but it performs fairly well in our lab tests. It receives an excellent score for energy efficiency, a very good score for temperature uniformity, and midlevel scores for thermostat performance and crisper drawer performance. But it also receives a subpar score for noise, meaning it runs loud compared with other fridges, and a poor score for ease of use. Its only feature is gallon-jug storage on its door, and it comes in a white finish; for stainless steel, choose the otherwise similar GE GTS22KYNRFS. In our latest member surveys, GE top-freezers receive a very good score for predicted reliability but a poor score for owner satisfaction.
Best 33-Inch Bottom-Freezer Refrigerators
Bottom-freezer refrigerators make fresh food easy to access, but you’ll have to bend to reach the freezer bins. Most of these have less storage than top-freezers.
LG LRDCS2603S
The LG LRDCS2603S bottom-freezer is an admirable performer overall, earning stellar ratings for thermostat performance and temperature uniformity, as well as very good ratings for energy efficiency, noise, ease of use, and icemaker performance in CR’s tests. This fridge’s one weak spot in our tests is its crisper drawers, which receive a poor performance score. While this 33-inch model might look basic from its stainless steel exterior, it has an icemaker, spillproof shelves, a built-in water filter, and digital controls. Based on our latest survey data of CR members, LG bottom-freezers receive an outstanding rating for predicted reliability and a midlevel rating for owner satisfaction.
Whirlpool WRB322DMBM
The 33-inch Whirlpool WRB322DMBM bottom-freezer shines in our tests for its excellent temperature uniformity and crisper drawer performance. It receives an above-average rating for thermostat performance and decent ratings for energy efficiency and noise output. Like most bottom-freezers we’ve tested, it earns a lower score for ease of use, and its icemaker performance is subpar. This model features spillproof shelves and digital controls. In our member surveys, Whirlpool bottom-freezers earn an excellent rating for predicted reliability and a middling score for owner satisfaction.
Best 33-Inch Side-by-Side Refrigerators
The narrow doors of side-by-side models make them an ideal pick for tight kitchen spaces, but you might have trouble storing wider items, like pizza boxes.
GE GSE23GGPWW
The 33-inch GE GSE23GGPWW touts stellar ratings in both our temperature uniformity and thermostat performance tests. This side-by-side model also receives near-top-level scores for ease of use and icemaker performance. It receives decent scores for energy efficiency and noise output, but its crisper drawer performance is lackluster. The fridge is equipped with some nice bells and whistles, including digital controls, a built-in water filter, and an external water/ice dispenser. In CR’s member surveys, GE side-by-side refrigerators receive a very good rating for predicted reliability but a poor rating for owner satisfaction.
Whirlpool WRS321SDHZ
The Whirlpool WRS321SDHZ side-by-side receives an excellent rating for thermostat performance and a very good rating for temperature uniformity. It also receives decent scores for ease of use and noise output. But it has a few weak spots, with a poor score for crisper drawer performance and unfavorable scores for energy efficiency and icemaker performance. This 33-inch fridge comes with many features, including a through-the-door water/ice dispenser, a freezer light, and digital temperature controls. In our member surveys, Whirlpool side-by-side refrigerators receive a middling rating for predicted reliability and a dismal rating for owner satisfaction.
Best 33-Inch French-Door Refrigerators
French-door refrigerators are the most popular pick among our members, and they generally come with more features than top-freezers or bottom-freezers. On the flip side, they tend to use more energy.
GE GNE25JYKFS
The GE GNE25JYKFS French-door refrigerator delivers solid performance all-around. In addition to receiving strong ratings in our energy-efficiency and ease-of-use tests, this 33-inch model aces our thermostat performance and temperature uniformity assessments. It also receives decent scores for noise output, crisper drawer performance, and icemaker performance. This model boasts a nice set of features, such as spillproof and half shelves, an internal water dispenser, a built-in water filter, and digital temperature controls. As a brand, GE French-door fridges receive midlevel ratings for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction in CR’s member surveys.
LG LF25H6330S
The 33-inch-wide LG LF25H6330S performs quite well in our tests, with top-tier ratings for thermostat performance and temperature uniformity, and very good ratings for noise output, ease of use, and icemaker performance. It also receives a decent rating for energy efficiency and a poor rating for crisper drawer performance. In our member surveys, LG French-door refrigerators receive midlevel ratings for both predicted reliability and owner satisfaction. This model is loaded with features, including a through-the-door water and ice dispenser, a built-in water filter, spillproof shelves, WiFi connectivity, and touchpad temperature controls. The cheaper LG LF25H6200S, also a 33-inch-wide model, performs just as well in temperature uniformity and thermostat performance, but it lacks certain features, like the external water and ice dispenser.
How CR Tests Refrigerators
We rate refrigerators based on their thermostat performance, temperature uniformity, noise output, ease of use, energy efficiency, crisper performance, and icemaker performance (if they have one).
Every refrigerator we test gets wired with 15 temperature sensors. We then monitor those thermocouples for more than a month in one of three temperature-controlled chambers, collecting more than 5.4 million temperature readings for each fridge we test. The results tell us how well a refrigerator maintains a set temperature and how temperature varies in different areas of a fridge, so we can determine which models will keep your food fresh longer.
Our testers measure the noise when the compressor starts up and the steady hum while the fridge is running. For ease of use, we examine the fridge’s layout, controls, and lighting.
We measure each fridge’s true usable capacity, subtracting the space taken up by filters, lights, and other components. To see how efficient each fridge is, we measure the electricity consumption per cubic foot of that usable capacity.
We also factor in survey data from thousands of CR members to judge brand reliability and satisfaction. All of that data and more inform CR’s refrigerator ratings and each model’s Overall Score.
Take a look into our refrigerator labs for more information on how we test.
