The batteries can melt and smoke from overheating, putting people and property at risk
The recalled 40-volt batteries were used in battery lawn mowers and outdoor tools.

Chervon North America has recalled about 63,000 lithium-ion batteries made under the Skil brand name. The batteries can overheat, smoke, and melt, posing fire and burn hazards to users.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the company has received 100 such reports from consumers to date, including 49 reports of property damage and eight reports of injury, including minor burns and/or smoke inhalation.
The recall applies only to 40-volt 5.0Ah (amp-hour) lithium-ion batteries. The batteries were sold individually or bundled with a battery lawn mower and charger.
Details of the Skil Battery Recall
The recall: About 63,000 40-volt 5.0Ah Skil lithium-ion batteries with the model number BY8708-00. All of the recalled batteries were made before May 1, 2021. The words “SKIL” and “PWRCORE 40” are printed on the batteries, though not all batteries with this design are impacted. A full list of recalled batteries and specific date codes is in the CPSC release.
The risk: The batteries can overheat, smoke, or melt, posing fire and burn hazards to users.
Incidents/injuries: Chervon North America, the company that manufactures the batteries under the Skil name, has received 100 reports of such incidents, including 49 reports of property damage and eight reports of injuries.
Where and when sold: At Lowe’s and other hardware and home improvement stores and Amazon, lowes.com, and walmart.com from October 2019 through December 2024 for about $170 (for batteries sold individually) and about $400 (for combination kits with lawn mowers).
The remedy: Stop using a recalled battery immediately and contact Chervon for a refund or replacement; you should register for the recall. Chervon will provide a battery collection kit for you to return the recalled battery and will provide a refund or replacement upon return of the recalled battery.
